Writing-Intensive Course Proposal Form

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this course proposal form. Your proposal will undergo review by the WATC Committee, and you will receive a response after the committee meets. In most cases, you and your chair will receive an email message identifying the approval status before you receive a more extensive proposal response from the committee.

1. (a) Please describe the writing assignments you plan to use in the course and indicate the anticipated length (in pages or word count) for each assignment. (Assignments should add up to at least 4500 words or 18 double-spaced pages of final draft quality text.)

(b) Indicate how the writing assignments will be weighted in students’ overall grades. (Writing should constitute at least 25% of the student's grade in the course.)

(c) Describe a few informal Writing to Learn (WTL) activities you intend to use. (WTL does not have to be graded. See the WAC Guide or our WAC Resources Canvas site for examples.)
Please upload one assignment sheet for a writing assignment you will be asking students to complete in this proposed course. This should ideally be the most substantial writing assignment you will require. Your assignment sheet can be a rough draft.

Please make sure the assignment has the following:
1. Clear statement of audience (who the student is writing to)
2. Clear statement of writer role (who is the writer in relationship to the audience)
3. Identify which WAC Student Learning Outcomes the assignment supports

2. Please indicate how you plan to build writing as a process (brainstorming—drafting—revising—editing) into your assignments.

[For example, will you require students to revise one or all of the above assignments? Will you count drafts towards the final grade? Will you set up peer review, writing conferences, or suggest writing tutor appointments? How might you effectively incentivize writing center appointments or structure peer review for the best results?]
3. Please explain the strategies you will use to provide feedback on and grade students' writing, based, ideally, on some of the best practices we discussed in the workshop. (Consider minimal marking, a "Dear Reader" letter, offering 3 global end comments, etc. What categories might your rubric include?)

4. What are the key elements of writing in your field that you want students to grasp (example: conciseness, argumentation, integrating evidence, using AP style), and how will you provide in-class (or out-of-class) instruction about writing?
